Wyoming Backwater Fly Fishing
July 31st I woke up and found myself jumping on a plane from Orlando, Florida to Salt Lake City, Utah. Then I scored a sweet cup of coffee and a turkey burger, only to find myself hopping on a smaller flight from Salt Lake to Cody, Wyoming. When I landed in Cody, I had one thing on my mind…Fish…and MORE FISH!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sK_D-loaOkQFor fishing this area I brought along my Sage Response 5wt rod. This is a great rod for handling some of the larger fish in the stream. However, I will probably bring a 3 wt with me, as well, on the next trip. Both will be adequate to cover most of the state's waterways.
Hiking into Wyoming's backwater was not an easy task. As I scurried up the winding valley with 30 plus pounds of camping gear, my wife made her way up the hill with nothing but camera gear. Luckily all this hiking got us where the fish were.
We were blessed with nothing but solid sunshine for the first 3 days of the trip, catching over 40 fish on each of the first few days. Wyoming cutthroat, after cutthroat, after cutthroat!
A good portion of the fish measured in the 16-19 inch range. However, even the little guys were a blast. From 9am-6pm was nonstop dry fly action. A fly fisherman's paradise. Sadly, I am back in good old Florida. Had a great time in the backcountry with my wife: doing "what we love" with "who we love".
